  • Quick thoughts upon finishing: Um, I had a lot of thoughts about The Scarlet Pimpernel. Since these are my QUICK thoughts, let me list them for you:
    — Gross overuse of cliche, adverbs, adjectives and general cheesiness. The literary police need to be on alert.
    — This book has about all the subtlety of being hit in the face with a brick.
    — Why is this considered a classic? Is it even considered a classic?
    — One word: antisemitism (and pretty anti-women in general, but that’s more than one word)
    — I can see why this became popular once it was moved to the stage. This book reminds me of stories like The DaVinci Code or (I imagine) Twilight: absolutely horrible books, mildly entertaining movies.
    — Don’t read this book.
