From May 30-July 11, 2009, I studied magazine and book publishing at New York University’s Summer Publishing Institute. As part of NYU’s Graduate School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the six-week program involved intensive coursework in all aspects of the business, from marketing and PR, to copy editing and website design. We had the privilege of being taught by the industry’s top professionals, from all the major magazines and publishing houses, and gained valuable experience through hands-on projects where we launched our own magazine and publishing imprint. Check out the official course listing for more information.
For our first project, we were divided into groups, assigned roles found in any magazine office, and asked to create our own magazine. We had to formulate a name and tagline, create content, design for print and the web, draw up a budget, and devise various marketing tactics in order to provide a supportive foundation for our brand.
My group created the magazine Salute, a lifestyle magazine geared toward the wives and family members of those in the military. In my role as Web Designer, I designed the look the magazine’s web presence, including the design for a social networking site for military wives, husbands and other family members.
