Random Friday: happy derby anniversary + bookends
First, I just want to say that Wednesday was my one-year anniversary of playing roller derby. Huzzah! So, even though this song is corny, it’s absolutely, positively true: roller derby did save my soul this past year. Also, I WANT these bookends from Anthropologie:
Fin: ‘The Emperor of All Maladies’
‘The Emperor of All Maladies’ by Siddhartha Mukherjee Date finished: May 29, 2012 Genre: Health, Science Year: 2010 Project: n/a Reading List: Spring 2012 Quick thoughts upon finishing: Sometimes being a book person (and compulsive reader of book blogs) is a good thing. I had heard a lot of buzz about The Emperor of All [...]
PF Cooks: tomato and feta salad
I’m not a fan of raw onions. Or red wine vinegar (at least in amounts I can taste it). But I still wanted to try this recipe from Ina Garten’s Barefoot Contessa at Home. It was really easy. And it turned out really tasty. Sometimes I surprise myself. I made this as a side dish [...]
Having a (digital) life outside work
One of my co-workers was recently laid off, and almost immediately afterward, I revived my long-dormant Twitter account. Part of me felt restless and bored; I felt like seeing what I could make of my Twitter-blog combo as I drew ever-closer to my wedding date. But I think another part of me was trying to [...]
‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ lane cake
It’s no secret To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite novels (I have a cat named Harper Lee, for pete’s sake). Which is why I became really excited when Cara from the Yummy Books blog wrote about baking a traditional lane cake, of Miss Maudie-fame from To Kill a Mockingbird. Now I know [...]
New to the derby helmet

I’m thinking I should include this in my next fan letter to Stephen King … OK, I’ve never actually written one of those, but maybe I should now. And if you’re [...]
PF Works: A look into this fool’s office
I’m a big fan of design blogs like Design*Sponge, so I’ve been thinking of taking some snapshots of my own workspace for some time now. Working from home as I do, a proper home office is absolutely critical. I’ve taken a lot of time putting together my little office and I’m really happy with it. [...]
Great Quotes: ‘The Emperor of All Maladies’
‘If a man die,’ William Carlos Williams once wrote, ‘it is because death / has first possessed his imagination.’ Death possessed the imagination of my patients that month, and my task was to repossess the imagination from death. It is a task almost impossibly difficult to describe, an operation far more delicate and complex than [...]
See these pants here?
I just wanted to share that they are my favorite pair of “sleepy” pants. Because yes, those are frogs … working out … in the middle of a snowstorm. Joel tells me to get rid of them. Never. Never, I tell you. It’s a good thing I work from home because there are some days [...]
