All I want to do…

…is survive this week. And next. Without dying. Or falling asleep standing up. Or blowing up in a stress ball. Or throwing my shitty computer against a wall. I don’t know what I need more: 10+ hours of uninterrupted sleep, a drink or a vacation.

Up Next: ‘Fat Land’

Fat Land by Greg Critser Date began: Feb. 26, 2012 Genre: Science, Health Project: n/a Reading List: Spring 2012, Rory’s Reading List Got it: This is one of the first book I’ve borrowed from the library in a long time. Why I picked it up: I have a strange fascination with books about food, cultural dietary concerns and, particularly, why [...]

Judging the news

I don’t like to judge any local journalists for their publications/broadcasts. I know how hard the industry can be. But our Fox station just did a “story” on why the women at the Fox studio are always cold, while the men are quite warm. There was a lot of “look at our space heaters” shots, [...]

Last thing I’ll say about ‘The Blind Assassin’ (and Downton Abbey)

On this blog, I don’t tend to record my random, minute thoughts about books while I’m reading them. But with the second season finale of Downton Abbey all coming to a close last Sunday, I thought this was a mildly-appropriate, blog-like thought. I’m not going to lie: I have a tendency to become obsessed with [...]

Fin: ‘The Blind Assassin’

The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood Date finished: Feb. 23, 2012 Genre: Fiction Year: 2000 Project: n/a Reading list: Winter 2011-12, Man Booker Prize Quick thoughts upon finishing: I’ve been sitting here for the past half hour since finishing The Blind Assassin, trying to think of how to begin talking about this book. Buzzwords tend [...]

The nature of tragedy, according to Atwood

I’ve looked back over what I’ve set down so far, and it seems inadequate. Perhaps there is too much frivolity in it, or too many things that might be taken for frivolity. A lot of clothes, the styles and colours outmoded now shed butterflies’ wings. A lot of dinners, not always very good ones. Breakfasts, [...]

Wednesday jams

I always need some motivation on Wednesday. My work meetings always seem to fall on Wednesdays, there’s that whole hump day thing and then I need to un-cloud my brain to drive to roller derby practice. This works:

For love of cream puffs

Since moving to Detroit, I’ve discovered that Fat Tuesday is a day to eat paczki — a really dense jelly/cream-filled doughnut apparatus. It’s supposedly Polish and since everyone and their brother has a Polish grandma around these parts, it’s apparently mandatory to eat one of these things today. Well, I’m not Polish — I’m German. [...]

Music for a pumped up Sunday

Who’s feeling pumped that her derby team won last night 220 to 77? This girl. Who will be resting an over-extended right knee all day as she waits for the finale of Downton Abbey tonight? This girl.

When it rains…

Well, you know what they say. This is why this week sucks: Joel working doubles (8 am-midnight) THREE full days this week A three-hour work meeting that put me behind for the majority of Wednesday Covering a city commission meeting until long past midnight Monday Staying up until midnight Tuesday putting together MEAP charts My [...]
